We know from the research that pets can provide benefits to us as humans. We also know that pet loss can be profound and the grief process when a pet dies is comparable to human loss.

We also know that relationships often end. That leaves couples with the decision of who keeps the pet after separation. What we don't know is how pets feature during this process and the implications such decisions may have on mental health and functioning of people who lose primary ownership as a consequence of a breakup.

This study aims to address this gap and develop a model to explain the various aspects associated with this complex topic.

If you have lost ownership of a companion animal as a result of a separation, I would like to hear from you.
